Marie Griggs Alvarez
December 2, 1945 – January 27, 2026
On the blessed day of December 2, 1945, in the heart of Rio Grande City, Texas, a spirited and generous soul was born — Marie Griggs Alvarez. Known affectionately by many names, including Mamie, Madre (a title lovingly given even by those not related), Granny Delicious, and Mimay, Marie touched countless lives with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.
Marie extended her compassion generously to her family, friends, and community. She found joy in cooking and baking her delicious desserts, and cherished the simple pleasures of life — especially her tres beloved pajaritos, which brought her daily happiness.
Her life mantra, "I did it my way," was reflected in the way she lived, loved, and cared for others. She carried an enduring love for Christmas — a joy she could keep going all year long.
Marie was the rock of her family — a steadfast presence always ready with candy, treats, or rosaries to share with strangers and loved ones alike. She was a living embodiment of her Catholic faith, beautifully reflecting the words of Luke 6:38:
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap."
Her children, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren were her greatest blessings — her sunshines — filling her life with immeasurable love and purpose.
Marie is survived by her loving husband, Jaime Alvarez; her children, Jessica Marie Saenz, Stephanie Marie Saenz Guzman (LT), David Saenz, Rolando Roel Martinez Jr, and San Juanita Martinez Romero (Milton); and her brothers, Peter Griggs (Connie) and Joseph David Griggs (Jennie).
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Jeter Griggs Sr. and Maria Griggs; her beloved son, Julio "Jay" Saenz; and her brother, William Jeter Griggs Jr.
